Benchtop Options

When the news came through to us late last year that the ban on engineered stone would be passed it was a nervous time for those in the Kitchen and Joinery industry. Fast forward a year later and in hindsight, we had nothing to worry about!

We did know that a lot of progress behind the scenes had been made by many manufacturers in preparation for the news. We fully support making our industry safer so we were both apprehensive and excited about how the benchtop industry would look once the ban was in place.

As we have had time in the Kitchen industry to settle into the new engineered stone alternatives that are silica free since the ban earlier this year. We wanted to touch on the great alternatives that we have been working with over the last 6 – 12 months.

At Built to Desire we work with many stone brands such as Caesarstone, Smartstone, YDL Stone, Quantum Quartz & Talostone to name a few. We have seen across the industry new and innovative products released which has brought about new colour & material options. The only problem will be deciding which one to choose with so many great colours & benchtop options!

Below we will touch on the alternatives to the original engineered stone as well as highlight other alternatives to stone that you can select for your benchtop.

Zero Silica Engineered Stone

Manufacturers have stepped up to develop new innovative products that look and feel like traditional engineered stone.  The innovative new benchtops are made from recycled materials such as glass, which also delivers a more sustainable solution. The breakthrough technology is durable, strong and versatile. Some stone brands have kept their original colour line, with the addition of new options, which helps with colour matching to previous projects that were in engineered stone. We have also been introduced to some beautiful new colours within the new ranges.

Sintered Stone

Sintered benchtops are created with high heat and immense pressure. This technique creates a durable product that is also able to withstand high levels of heat. A hot pot can be placed on the benchtop without damage. It is also a versatile option for outdoor kitchens as the product is UV stable and has fire and weather proof properties.

The material is also easy to clean and requires little to no maintenance as it does not absorb liquids or odours and is scratch resistant.

Porcelain

Whilst porcelain is not a new product, it has become a popular alternative. Porcelain is heat and scratch resistant and is also versatile to be used for both indoor and outdoor applications. It is also nonporous which inhibits bacteria and mold making it a sanitary option. Porcelain is also an eco-friendly option as it is made from natural minerals. It can mimic the look of various natural stones such as marble, granite or even concrete, offering a wide range of design options.

Natural Marble

Natural marble has always been silica free. It is a luxurious stone option should your budget accommodate this. We love the look and feel of natural marble. It is known for its elegant appearance, veining and soft texture. Each slab is unique so we always recommend choosing any natural marble in person to view the slabs.

Natural marble can also withstand high temperatures and will not scorch or burn easily. Its timeless appeal means that is doesn’t go out of style making it a valuable investment in terms of aesthetics and durability.

Laminate Benchtops

Laminate benchtops are the most affordable benchtop option and have been a popular alternative to stone. The benefits of laminate benchtops are that it is available in a wide range of colours such as traditional solid colours as well as timbergrain and marble look options. Some benefits of laminate is the installation is quicker as it is installed when your joinery is installed so that there is no waiting time for your benchtops to be installed. Laminate is water resistant but should be wiped up timely as prolonged water on the benchtop can damage this. It does require more care as it is not as scratch resistant or heat resistant as stone, but it is still a great cost effective option.

Natural Timber Benchtops

Natural timber benchtops are known for their natural beauty, warmth and versatility. They are a durable and strong option but do need more care than stone or laminate. Timber offers a warm look that compliments a wide range of interior styles. The surface is oiled or lacquered to enhance the natural grain and protect the surface.

Timber is warmer to the touch than materials like natural marble or quartz, making it more comfortable to work with in colder climates. It also adds a more tactile, natural feel to a space.

As you can see from the above, we are sure to find a benchtop solution that fits not only your style but budget. Let us help you select the perfect benchtop for your next joinery project. Contact our team for friendly advice or to book an in-home measure.
